Tina Kim Gallery is pleased to present a summer group exhibition organized in collaboration with Los Angeles-based gallery Commonwealth and Council. On view June 28–August 3, 2018, the exhibition showcases works by 11 artists working in LA, who celebrate their manifold identities and experiences through the shared dialogue of art.

Works by Carolina Caycedo, Clarissa Tossin, Beatriz Cortez, and Rafa Esparza examine the impacts of globalization and capitalism, and the legacy of colonialism from a Latinx perspective, while Kang Seung Lee appropriates and reworks images of queer men and the LA uprising from mass media and art history to explore how bodies marked by difference are represented in the popular imaginary. Gala Porras-Kim’s imaginative epistemological inquiry poses questions about meaning, ownership, heritage, and value as she takes on linguisitic and anthropological subjects such as Korean, her mother tongue, which is foreign to her, disappearing languages from Oaxaca, and artifact fragments from various historic sites and museum collections. In Box (a proposition for ten years), Patricia Fernández presents a time-based sculpture that marks and celebrates her deepening relationship with the gallery as the piece evolves with objects, letters, and mementos that accumulate in a box over a decade. Elsewhere in the gallery, works by EJ Hill, Alice Könitz, Jennifer Moon, Jen Smith evince Commonwealth and Council’s belief that art should be shared experiences, open-ended and communal.

The exhibition at Tina Kim Gallery coincides with a concurrent New York presentation of Commonwealth and Council opening on July 1, 2018 at 47 Canal in the Lower East Side. For these companion exhibitions, each gallery brings its own distinct history of nurturing its respective intergenerational community of artists while advocating for increased diversity in the art world.
